Avril Banned

Dissapointing. Avril's concert was finally cancelled by the government after numerous protests by our idiotic Islamists.

What narrow minded fools of the nation. The reason:

"It is not timely. It's not in the good spirit of our National Day. If we go ahead with the concert, it is contrary to what we are preparing for," said Shukran Ibrahim, a senior official from the culture ministry's department that vets all foreign artistes.

Kamarulzaman Mohamed, a party youth official, said yesterday that Lavigne's show was "considered too sexy for us" and would promote the wrong values just before Merdeka.

"We don't want our people, our teenagers, influenced by their performance. We want clean artistes, artistes that are good role models," he said.

I BEG YOUR FUCKING PARDON?!?!?! Clean artistes? Like what?

FUCKING MAWI and SURE HEBOH concerts?

Owh pleeassseee...how are we ever gonna progress! And with this ban, who would wanna come to our country anymore to perform?

Dumb tards!

Read more about it here & here.

Lazy Eye

GAHHH!!!!!!!!!

This seldom occurs to me prior to the exam week, but somehow, this time around,

I F**KING CAN'T CONCENTRATE!

Shit, finals is like in 3 weeks and I'm like barely 1/3 away from completing my revision. Ahh...and the worst thing is, I don't feel a pinch of the stress and ironically...relaxed!

WTF?!?!?!?!

Classmates are filling up their empty cerebrals with input from the notes, packing up the library and staying back at college. Did try my best to focus in the library this morning, but 20 minutes through, I dozed off on the chair. Zzzz....and not to mention I had a good 8 hours sleep the previous night. So I decided to head back home to catch up. Mana tau reach home; 1st thing...switched on the aircond, then the laptop, listen song, lie down awhile...and flap, slept for 2 hours plus! (ended up online and lazing around after that)

WTF?!?!?!?!

I read...I do read. Just that I read a freaking page in 20 minutes! Okay, nevermind that, try listen music while studying. 10 minutes later...found myself humming to the tunes. =.= Tried putting some instrumental songs, and ended up with a half closed eyelid. 5 pages, and an hour after that...I shit. After I shat, I came back, opened the book and stared at a page for another 15 minutes. (ended up playing ps2 after that)

WTF?!?!?!?!

Maybe its the bed I'm sitting on, which makes me wana lie on it...and sleep. Or perhaps the cold room which paralyzes my learning progress. Whatever it is, the problem lies within me and my study mode seems to be dysfunctional at the moment.

Someone help me before I self destruct?

BTW...I did try off aircon, laptop, music...only the book. And I ended up folding origami with paper money.

An increase doesn't do good all the time

Snippet: Everything also naik...wished my marks would naik too! =)

It's gonna be on every major newspaper tomorrow. Even before that, everyone around seems to be knowing about it, mainly from SMSes and by word of mouth. Anyways, for those still lagging behind:

The petrol price has increased! (starting midnight...which was 20 minutes ago)

Not just any normal hike of few cents, but a whooping 40%! Which brings it from the previous RM1.70 to a shocking RM2.70! RM2.70 per litre...that's like the price of a bowl of kolo mee back at home!

OMGWTFBBQ! (literally)

Quoted from TheStar: "Abdullah also announced a RM625 annual cash rebate per vehicle, for owners of private vehicles with engine capacities of up to 2,000cc, as well as pickup trucks and jeeps with engine capacities of up to 2,500cc."

"Owners of private motorcycles with engine capacities of up to 250cc will receive RM150."

"For owners of private vehicles with engine capacities exceeding 2000cc, road tax will be reduced by RM200."

"Owners of private motorcycles with engine capacities above 250 cc will get RM50 reduction in road tax."

Ridiculous!

Again "He also said that Tenaga Nasional Bhd would be raising electricity rates by 18% for homes and 26% for business users."

"The announcements are part of the new fuel subsidy plan."

Again...RIDICULOUS!

What's wrong with our leader's mind at the moment! Gosh, and to make matters worst...there is also going to be a hike in public transport fare!

In simple equation:
Increased petrol price = increased prices of market goods = increased public madness at whoever = increased budget = decreased pocket money = !?!?!?!?!?!?

I dare not say more...

When It Appears To Fall Apart

Snippet: Listening to Landon Pigg - Can't Let Go. And yes, there are so much things that I can't let go.

Another late night rambling. Just doesn't feel like sleeping yet. Maybe it's the nap I took earlier, maybe it's the hungry feeling, maybe it's the thing in your mind that's so very unexplainable, you just can't type it down in words.

I feel like I'm surrounded by faces hidden upon faces. People in disguise, those who dwell in the fog, creeping up to you, in a costume of another creature. For they are those who come around with a hi and leave you without a bye. Leaving a false impression, making you a subject of their judgment. Behind our backs, they plan to stab you with knives of multi blades, a plan only revealed to those they feel comfortable around.

Guess that this is the nature of us. Easily pulled into a conversation, hardly realizing the
damage of it. Tensions arise within this small community, and I'm so afraid I'm falling deep into it. There are those who don't realize the depth of it, playing happily above in the shallow waters. For those stuck deep within the trench, they are those spun into a web of confusion. And as for me, I believe there is a need of salvation.

Everytime we seek, we ask for help. When help arrives, we bath in joy. The help arrives all right, but not from those we seek. The cycle continues day by day, the feelings are being played like a CD on repeat. Someone needs to press that stop button as it's playing too fast.

Our mind chooses not to hear, but what about our senses?

A week in short

Don't feel like writing in full, so I'll just list everything that has happened or is to happen.

1) Futsal will kill your legs if you hadn't played it for months. Playing twice over the past 2 weeks is enough exercise to wear you down the following few days.

2) 2 of my classmates got into car accidents in this week alone. Minor ones...but still, what a disastrous coincidence.

3) Narnia: Prince Caspian was a great movie! One of the best fantasy cinematography I've seen in a long time.

4) Summited a video for Nuffnang's Big Mac Chant contest, hoping to win the 10k prize. Here's the link to my video >>> Click Here. PLEASE vote for me! >>> Vote Here (find the video entitled Big Mac, Big Mouth Challenge)

5) My class is planning a week's trip to Sabah after our 1st year ends, somewhere at end of September. Plans to conquer Mount Kinabalu as well. Hope it goes along. (Time to save some money)

6) Lastly, I changed my hair look again. Will see it in recent photo's of me soon.

Scattered Stones

Hmm...it's been time I've updated. A week into my holiday break & I found myself sitting at home most of the time. Guess this is something I'm quite fond of everytime I return for a holiday break. Found out that most of my buddies weren't around anymore, so not many outings except a few with Edward. I guess the both of us share a common thing, which is "holidays-with-nothing-to-do-but-sit-at-home".

Photobucket
Sometimes...you wished not to be seen

I'm actually sitting in front of the laptop 12 of the 15 hours that I'm awake. The only time I stepped out of my room was to eat, shower and occasionally going out. I wake up to the smell of lunchtime meals and having the sun shining directly above, and asleep when the backdoor neighbour kakak wakes up to do the laundry. I think you can picture the situation here. With nothing much to do in the real world, the virtual world kept me 'alive'.

Photobucket
Sometimes...it's so vibrant, you're alive!

I've been watching YouTube more than the TV set outside in the living. There's tons of videos to view, and lately I've been watching those musicians with their songs and covers. Some of them are really good and have potential to be aspiring stars, such as Ana Free, Miaa Rose and Olivia Thai. Then there's this insane child prodigy, Sungha Jung, who plays fingerstyle guitar like a maestro. I was then inspired to make a video and post it online. Spontaneously, together with Edward, we recorded a night drive video, but sadly it was too big to be posted up.

Photobucket
Sometimes...it's so fast

Besides the tube, I've been hooked up playing back Dota. My Dota skills have plummeted tremendously. Not sure if this is a good thing or not, but I think I've slowly lost my touch in it. Well, blame it on Counter-Strike, which lately I've resumed playing. Trying to revive those fragging days of yesteryears. I'm quite shocked to see people still playing the old 1.6 version when CS: Source has been out already. More shockingly, I found myself getting fragged by kids as young as 10 years old. No joke, but seriously, these kids got the quick fingers.

Photobucket
Sometimes...it's a red light to everything

As people plan for holiday breaks, I'm planning what to do after it. Of course it's back to those dental books waiting at my desk back in KL. Yet, there's this thought of going back to AIMST to visit my college mates, but I'll guess that have to wait. Then there's the concerts and gigs going on, one of which is the Freedom Fest which most probably I'm attending. When there's the likes of Tiesto and Ferry Corsten, this is something not to be missed.

Photobucket
Sometimes...it feels like your floating

Sometimes, I wished I could attend those gigs more often, especially those with live bands and so on. And many times when there was a gig going on, I missed it because of my tight schedule & the lack of transport. I missed Colbie Cailat due to exams, Incubus because of transport problems and many gigs at Laundry because non of my friends wanted to go. Maybe one day, I'll just go myself, but to think about it, feels kinda sad going alone. I guess my housemates aren't just the people who would stand outside and listen to a local band playing indie music. To them the Kbox and yamcha's are more hap' =.=

Photobucket
Sometimes...it's just plain empty

I felt there's a huge difference between the friends I have in Kuching and those I have in KL. The major difference is of course the language barrier, which is the most obvious. Back in Kuching, it's mainly English, but once at KL, it's like I've to switch on a different frequency to tune in those Mandarin words. And when Canto comes popping in, all hell breaks lose.

The things we do, the places we go, the times we hung out...all so different.

Photobucket
Sometimes...it's just perfect.

Study Lapse

2 days left...
33 hours and counting...

Marks the end of my first semester exams...of which, I could just feel the aftermath of it!

Imagine the painstaking countless hours of ripping through the pages of my impossibly thick books, which no matter how much I read them, somehow, seems like a neverending story of pathways and scientifically termed phrases...

And Thursday...Gawd, would you ever come sooner?

Makes me wished exams end tomorrow.

Yet there's this Physiology paper in 7 hours time. Followed by Biochemistry the day after. What comes next doesn't really matter except that it has nothing related with the word 'dental', 'anatomy' and beta-adrenergic blockers...

What brings me up late tonight? The plan was to study prior to the football match in 30 minutes time, but I was hooked up reading these interesting Singaporean blogs which convey posts of an entirely different perspective and opens up a new category of blogs written by anonymous bloggers.

Reading those blogs, which had posts directed straight to the point with clearcut mind to screen thoughts, impresses me with their level of English literacy. So much that it seems that they (Singaporeans) are far more superior in terms of language and vocabulary compared to us. Gosh, they made every post seemed ripped from pages of our literature component books.

Remember the saying a picture is worth a thousand words? Their's is the total opposite.

There's 2 more topics to revise, I'm guessing I'll leave it for later after the match...that is if I manage to stay awake till dawn.

Study disaster

Snippet: My Adidas shoes were stolen from the shoe rack outside my apartment unit. Along with it were 2 more Nike shoes belonging to 2 of my housemates. !@#$%^ the thieves! I hope they rot or slip when wearing those shoes and bang their head on the pavement and end up in a coma! Curses!

Photobucket

The past few days has been hectic. I've to admit it...

I'M STRESSED. (finally...)

If there is anything to stress about, it has to be studies. Gosh, if it's not the Biochemistry, it's the Anatomy. If it's not the Anatomy, it's the Dental Anatomy. I barely could bring in the concentration to open the thick book lying on my shelf. The trickle of sweat...

Having an OSPE (on-the-spot-practical-examination) pre-test this Thursday. It's my first time having this type of test. Not sure how its done, but somehow, I've got to memorize, identify and differentiate all the teeth in our oral cavity. And I'm yet to get started with it...

Photobucket

I guess I'm not the only one feeling the pressure. I can see it in the faces of my classmates. Although hidden by their facial expressions and their joyful manner, deep down, I think we're all worried about something.

What is there to worry about? Here's a short list by subjects of what I've to absorb into my grey matter within these 12 days:
- Tooth morphology & identification of every individual deciduous and permanent teeth
- 6 body systems in Physiology
- Microscopic, Gross, Development, & Neuro Anatomy which branches out into at least 10 subdivisions each
- Not to mention, 10 main topics of Biochemistry and the never ending pathways.

The list could go on, but the more I type them down, the more I found out what I've yet to study.

A classmate of mine has left the course. For her, a top student to suddenly leave the course before exams with reasons unclear left us wondering...

Is there something wrong with this course?

Next

Snippet: My friend & I witnessed a snatch theft as we walked back to our condo from 1 Utama around 9pm today. A negro lady had her purse snatched away by a man who hopped away on a motorbike. Now I'm worried about walking to 1 Utama eventhough it's just 15 minutes away by foot.

Amidst the darkness, a flicker of light finally emerges.

Last night was somewhat a massive revolt. As the nation turned on their TV sets, radio and whatever media they could, I too, followed the updates of the election results which was being streamed online.

At 4am, it was clear. The public had spoken.

As the nation prepares for a new era, post election drama begins to unfold.

Prior to yesterdays political shock, which saw the Opposition garnering wins in various places especially in Kedah, Penang, Kelantan & Selangor, I was told that rumours were being spread around to strike fear. Although the truth about these rumours were unclear, these were some of which I heard,

"The police were conducting random checks on cellphones containing SMSes which are anti-government or pro-opposition. Those caught could be fined or subjected to query on the spot."

"People are stocking up food and drawing cash from ATM's in the fear of another May 13 incident which some say have a potential to occur."

Well, it leaves now the Opposition to prove their worth.

Sigh.

On another note, exams in 4 weeks time. Barely prepared, it's save to say I am quite nervous. OK, maybe when I see my classmates piling up the books...Haha. But what shocked me and had me scrambling to my feet was the exam format: MCQ's with negative marking, short essays, slide (picture) identification & description, gross identification...GULP!

Every subject worries me:

Dental Anatomy lecturer drove us nuts with her lecture. Unable to get her powerpoint slides or even snap photos of it, it's gonna be hell during the picture identification in exams.

Biochemistry lecture reminds me of Physics during foundation; boring, long, monotonous lecture. Except that this time, the lecturer drags on and on and on, repeating not once, but sometimes up to 3 times. =.=

Anatomy lecture's OK, just that our dear old professor is somewhat "nyanyuk". Tends to forget things he taught or gave. It can be that bad till he says that the very textbook he wrote gave the wrong information and what he said during the lecture was right. Zzzz...

Physiology's the best for me, yet ,there's so much to study. A day's lecture could cover up to 20 pages in a reference book. And we are going topic by topic per day.

Sigh.

Time to work those study gears.

Home!

It's always nice to be back home. KL got me busily hooked for 3 months. So, getting back to Kuching is sort of a time-out session, away from the hectic big city.

Apart from the opening of the 2 new malls which I'm yet to visit, much of my hometown remains the same.

No highrise apartments,
No towering office blocks,
No sardine packed KTM's, Monorails and LRT's,
No crowded and over populated shopping malls,
No expensive and exquisite dining

Cheap, free and easy.

The way i like it.

Too bad it's only a weeks break. =.=

So, What Really Is Pleasure?

Was in the middle of a moral studies class when we touched on this subject. It defines pleasure with a utilitarianism calculus. Yeah, at first it might sound too confusing for us, one of those philosophical theories; but reading on after doing some research, I found it was rather interesting. Does it makes sense on how we define pleasure?

The Hedonic Calculus (taken from here)

Bentham’s hedonistic utilitarianism states that we always ought to perform that act that leads to the greatest pleasure. This raises the question as to how we are to quantify pleasure; if we cannot put a value on the quantity of pleasure that an act produces, then we cannot compare it to other acts in order to decide which of them we ought to perform.

To overcome this difficulty, Bentham proposed the hedonic calculus. The hedonic calculus lists seven features of pleasure to which attention must be paid in order to assess how great it is: intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity, and extent.

Intensity

The intensity of the pleasure caused by an act is reasonably self-explanatory. Mild pleasure is less valuable than intense pleasure, and so acts leading to the latter are to be preferred to acts leading to the former, other things being equal.

Duration

The duration of the pleasure caused by an act must also be taken into account when assessing the goodness of the act. Transient pleasure is less valuable than lasting pleasure, and so acts leading to the latter are to be preferred to acts leading to the former, other things being equal.

Certainty

The certainty criterion refers to the probability of the pleasure resulting from the act; how likely is it that the act will bring about the anticipated pleasure? If we must choose between an act that will definitely cause pleasure and an act that will only possibly bring about pleasure, then we do better to perform the former.

Propinquity

When deciding what to do, Bentham thought, we should bear in mind how distant are the anticipated benefits of each possible course of action. The more distant the benefits, in either space or time, the less weight we should give them in making our decision.

Fecundity

The fecundity of an act is the likelihood that the pleasures or pains that it causes will be followed by similar pleasures or pains. If the happiness that an act causes is likely to be followed by yet more happiness, then that act is better than a similar act that will cause only one isolated instance of happiness. Similarly, if the pain that an act causes is likely to be followed by still more pains, then that act is worse than it would otherwise be.

Purity

It is also important to be attentive to the purity of the pleasure and pain caused by an act. An act that causes only pleasure is better than one that causes the same amount of pleasure mixed with a little pain. When pleasure or pain are unmixed with their opposites, their purity is high; when they are so mixed, their purity is diminished.

Extent

The final criterion for quantifying the pleasure caused by an act is its extent: the more people enjoy the pleasure, the better. This criterion, unlike the previous six, was not among the original criteria described by Bentham, but was added by John Stuart Mill.

The question is, can pleasure really be defined and calculated?
